Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that goes beyond typical boils or acne. It often starts subtly and progresses in stages. Key symptoms to watch for include:
Painful, Deep-Set Lumps (Nodules) – These often appear in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, buttocks, and under the breasts. They feel like deep, tender knots under the skin.
Recurrent Boils and Abscesses – The lumps can enlarge, become intensely painful, and fill with pus, leading to recurring abscesses that may rupture.
Tunneling Tracts (Sinus Tracts) – As the disease progresses, channels can form beneath the skin, connecting inflamed areas. These tracts can leak fluid and are prone to infection.
Blackhead-Like Spots (Double-Ended Comedones) – Small pitted areas of skin containing blackheads, often appearing in pairs or small clusters.
Persistent Pain and Tenderness – Even between flare-ups, the affected areas may remain tender, sore, and warm to the touch.
Severe Itching (Pruritus) and Burning Sensations – The inflamed skin can cause significant discomfort, itching, or a burning feeling.
Scarring and Thickened Skin – Healing lesions often leave behind deep, pitted scars or rope-like, thickened skin (keloids), which can limit movement.
Drainage of Pus or Blood-Stained Fluid – Ruptured nodules and tracts can drain fluid with an odor, which can be distressing and impact daily life.
Early diagnosis and specialized care are crucial to manage HS, prevent severe progression, and improve quality of life.
